Looking out the window, we are now blessed with the legendary “perfect” San Diego weather, after being hit with 3 pretty good rain storms. It is now time to get outdoors, and enjoy the beautiful but brief green season that San Diego blesses us with starting this time of year.
In between storms this weekend, I snuck out for a brief day-hike in Mission Trails, and waded through the mass of people with the same idea, and was rewarded with the big payoff I was looking for. I hiked up the back part of Oak Canyon, approaching the freeway to the north and found that the small waterfalls splashing through the boulders were flowing full, and virtually deserted. I sat on a rock overlooking the biggest of these micro-falls, and lost myself in the sound of pounding water, and the green of my surroundings. I could almost imagine that there was not a busy freeway 1/2 mile behind me, and a massive city surrounding me. From my vantage point, it was just me the land, and the sound of crashing water. When my mind had quieted itself down, and I felt refreshed again, I wandered back out through the muddy trails, and rejoined civilization, and spent the rest of the weekend with my family.
I did not take a camera, I did not take anything to distract those few minutes from being mine. It was not a backcountry expedition, but sometimes a few pure minutes in a surrounding you love is enough to make one whole.
