The Wilderness Basics Snowcamp went without a hitch this last weekend. The penultimate event of the 10-week class was the most challenging of the 3 WBC snowcamps I have been on, but everyone stepped up, remained reasonably comfortable, and had some fun to boot. The weather was brutal, with a blizzard blowing through, and depositing cold weather and several feet of snow throughout the night and into the next day.
We had a great time constructing a double igloo in which 7- people slept the night away. They were most comfortable of the group, as most of the morning was spent digging people out of buried tents. Snowshoeing out through the deep powder was also a new experience, with everyone sharing the duty of breaking trail.
The course went entirely too fast, and I look forward to next year; fostering a new group of students into the world of camping and backpacking, and spending Tuesday nights with a group of folks I like and respect.
