I have had the opportunity to test out a pre-production version of the soon to be released Jetboil Flash. This next generation of the vaunted Jetboil PCS does not try to re-invent itself, rather it add to the feature set that has seen the PCS on top of the market on the market for the last several years. The Jetboil Flash is a self contained, easy to use cooking system that is even easier to use than its predecessor.

The addition of a thermochromic gauge on the exterior of the unit allows the user to know when the water inside has reached temperature, without opening the lid, further improving the efficiency of the stove and reducing the amount of gas it takes to bring liquids to a boil. The redesigned transparent lid also enhances the ability to see what is going inside the pot without letting precious heat escape. Jetboil has begun manufacturing their own burner units for the Flash and they differ in several ways from the burners on the original PCs units. I cannot comment on the performance of the new burner, as my Flash is a pre-production version with an older style burner. The top of the new burners are now made of perforated metal, rather than a steel wool material and the adjustment knob features a flip out wire handle that allow the user to adjust the flame without reaching under the unit. It appears to be much easier to manipulate with gloves. When I get my hands on a production model, I will report on the performance of the new features. Jetboil suffered a bit of a blow last year when they had to recall a number of units due to a burner design flaw. I applaud Jetboil’s efforts to bring the design and manufacture of the units in house, and take control of their own destiny. I have had an orginal PCS for a number of years, and I am very impressed with its performance. It is a good solid, well designed all in one solution for the typical backpacker, not looking to cook out of a aluminum soda can, and not interested in lugging the Coleman 2 burner stove on the trail. The weight to performance ratio is up admirable, and it is incredibly easy to use; a stove for everyone.
Overall the new Jetboil Flash is an upgrade from the PCS. It is not revolutionary enough for me to throw out my tried and true PCS and shell out money for a new Flash. For those in the market for a new all-in-one canister stove, Jetboil has provided a feature set that keeps pace with the competition. There is a reasons why the Jetbiol is bound to become a classic.
