Light weight and efficient were the words that came to mind as I first set up the Big Agnes Copper Spur 2 tent for the first time. The stuffed tent is only slightly larger than my “ultralight” 1 person tent, and just a bit heavier. The great thing about the Copper Spur 2 is it is a 2-person tent. Not palatial by any standards, but it has a reasonable amount of length, width, and headroom for any light weight 2-person tent. The tent also features dual doors and dual vestibules. All these features come on a tent with a listed trail weight of just 3lbs 6oz.
This freestanding double wall tent is fairly intuitive to set up, with only two separate shock corded poles to contend with, I was able to get it set up within 10-minutes on the first try, without reading any directions. Subsequent setup times were about half the time. While the interior is not wide, the inner walls of the tent are near vertical, and there is plenty of headroom to sit up inside the tent. The vestibules are large enough to hold a pack and a pair of boots, and best of all there are doors on each side, so there is not need to climb over each other to get out of the tent.
The Copper Spur 2 achieves it’s incredible space to weight ratio through good solid design. The design is similar to Big Agnes’ Emerald Mountain SL2 Tent which weighs in at just under a pound heavier. Big Agnes achieves this weight savings through the use of lighter weight fabrics in the fly and tent body. The price tag is reflects the upgrade (MSRP $399.95). While the fabrics feel thin and lightweight, they are purported to be durable. Only time and a vigorous workout in the tent killing, cholla infested Anza Borrego desert will answer the durability question, so check back soon for my field report on the Big Agnes Copper Spur 2 tent.
