My Name is Peter Spiller, and I am an Outdoor Geek.
I have loved the outdoors since I was a small child, camping and fishing with my parents all through Southern California, the Sierra’s and beyond. We never took a vacation as a family that involved a hotel during my entire childhood, and that was O.K. by me. I have carried this passion for the Outdoors into my adult life, and it is a large part of who I am. I hike, backpack, fish, and kayak extensively around San Diego county where I was born and raised, and now choose to raise my own children. When I am not running around the backcountry alone, or dragging my wonderful wife, and two precious daughters with me, I am supporting my habit by teaching at a local high school, or volunteering my time passing on experience through the programs such as the San Diego Sierra Club’s Wilderness Basics Course where I am currently serving as the “Car Camp Coordinator”.
I started this blog as a means of documenting my experiences in the outdoors, and to foster a stewardship of our land that I believe is critical to making this planet habitable to anyone who yearns to be one with nature. I spend most of my time in the San Diego Area, and therefor the majority of the documentation of this blog will be about San Diego County, but Outside San Diego has a double entendre as well. I will not limit my writings here to only San Diego. As an Educator, one of the perks is a great deal of time in the summer to explore our country, and my family and I take advantage of these opportunities as much as possible.
Enjoy

Hi Peter,
Just read your words about Ghost Mountain with interest as I have hiked up to the site dozens of times since 1981. In 2004-2005 the dozen or so hikes involved carrying lots of film equipment as were making our documentary short. We have now completed, or nearly completed, a feature-length version. Please take a look at our website. There will be a screening of the feature at the Borrego Springs Performing Arts Center on March 21 at 7:30pm sponsored by the Anza-Borrego Foundation. The next morning, March 22, at 9am we will lead a hike to Ghost Mountain and see it from the filmmakers perspective. Register for the hike through ABFI at 760-767-0465 or visit http://www.theabf.org. I look forward to seeing you and some of your blog readers there.
Happy trails,
John
